Any Suggestions?

Max has been having trouble recently. If he doesn't get what he wants right when he wants it he goes on a nice long rant, ie. "Fine then I will never go to Pre-School again. Never, never never. If Ms. Sheri doesn't like me then Fine! I don't want to go to pre-school anyway. I don't like pre-school, I don't like Ms. Sheri." This was yesterday when I took him to pre-school and didn't realize until we got there they he didn't have school that day.

He seems to have trouble with disappointment. I'm sure all kids do but I'm not sure how to handle it. I don't think he should have to convince him self that he doesn't want something just because he can't have it. Anyway if any of you have any great ideas let me know.

He also says Never & Forever all the time. "I will never get to have candy," or "It's going to take forever to clean my room!" I finally told him that never is a bad word and had him watch An American Tale because it has the song Never Say Never in it.

Anyway, I'm open to any suggestions or even just a, "That's what 4 year olds do" comment.

Primary Singing Time

I know this may not be very interesting for everyone. Some of you may be aware that I am the primary chorister in my ward. I am always looking online for ideas. I'm sure my ideas are not as great as some others may be but I thought I would post them for anyone who was looking for ideas.

I plan everything a month in advance. That way if anything comes up and I'm sick or something then I will have everything already planned. I can also give the pianist a little warning so they can practice the songs.

My great idea that hasn't been too successful but I still think it is cute is Robbie Reverent (I wish I had a picture). With my husbands help in design and my father-in-laws in wood work we created a little wooden boy. He is about 2 1/2 feet tall. He has a hole in his neck where we keep a tie. Robbie is Reverent from Head to Toe. When the children are being really reverent his tie reaches is toes. When they are not it is very very short. They main problem I have had with this is just finding a good balance with leading, listening, & dealing with the tie.

Within the Robbie Universe I have created Rowdy vs. Reverent. Robbie in his church clothes is pasted to a brown paper sack and Robbie in his basketball uniform is pasted to another brown paper sack. In the Reverent Robbie sack we have reverent songs. In the Rowdy Robbie sack we have the fun nursery songs, and action songs. The children choose a song out of each bag every other time. The goal is to know when it is appropriate to be rowdy and when it is not.

It's always hard when you are asked to sing in sacrament meeting and they haven't sung an Easter song in a year so you have to teach it all over again. So this is my solution.
Periodically when I'm tired of teaching program songs and they are tired of learning them I bring this out. They get to choose if they want a winter, spring, summer or fall song. We spend the time singing Christmas songs in the summer or Popcorn Popping when there is snow outside.

Another thing our ward has done for years is Solo Sunday. Every child has the opportunity to sing a solo, or in a small group. Sometimes we have solos and sometimes we have entire classes come up together and sing. Teachers can sing too. If anyone sings a solo they get 3 starbursts, if they sing a duet each get two starbursts, if the group is any larger then this they each get 1 starburst. This is fantastic for when you are out of town because your substitute only has to lead the opening and rest song.

The main thing I use for teaching a song is directed listening. This is when you sing the new song or play the cd and have the kids count the number of times you say "he", or touch their nose when you sing "savior". They are listening so closely to try and hear the specific word that they are absorbing all of the words and can sing it with you just after a few times. I take this a step further. I studied sign language in high school and college. So sometimes I will teach them signs for certain words and have them sign when I sing the word. They really enjoy learning sign language so it keeps them engaged.

Another GREAT resource is www.theideadoor.com if you haven't already stumbled on it. So I realize this is a long long blog but I've also attached my schedule from Jan 08-march 08. I can always use great ideas so I hope mine can help some of you. I always try to use the Outline they give at the beginning of the year for choosing the opening & rest songs. If I have any positive comments on putting this info on my blog then I will add each months schedule when I complete it.

Weight Loss

After one day of the cracker and Pidalyte diet proceeded by one night of vomiting I have lost 5lbs. 5lbs in 2 days, not bad. I'm trying to see the positive in my pain.

The Cracker and Pedialyte Diet

Mmm....let me tell you this diet is great! It is often accompanied by flu like symptoms but when all you can eat is crackers and Pedialyte you will for sure loose weight. It's also much easier to follow this very strict diet plan when your entire family is on it. I'll keep you updated on my progress while on this diet. I do not recommend this diet to anyone though. Hopefully none of you will have to go on it.

Max's Gingerbread Man Birthday Party

One of Max's favorite stories is The Gingerbread Man so we had a Gingerbread Man Birthday Party. Growing my brothers and I had this same party. His invitation was a die-cut of a gingerbread man that said, "Run, Run, as fast as you can to Max's house, he's the birthday man."

First we had the kids frost and decorate a Gingerbread Man Cookie. We made sugar cookies because I don't know many kids that like gingerbread cookies. Then we played a game to learn each others names. Steven read the kids the Gingerbread Man Book.

Now the next game was for sure a hit. One boy would hide the the box/oven and pretend to be a gingerbread man. Then everyone counted to four (because Max is turning four) and the gingerbread man would jump out of the oven and one of the boys would try to catch him. This was for sure a fan favorite!

Then we opened presents...

And had cake and Ice Cream.

Elese especially loved the cake.

We sent every family home with a board book of The Gingerbread Man. It was a hit. One of the little boys even brought his book to church to look at during sacrament meeting.

My New Goal

I've noticed that once I get on the computer to check the news or blogs that it is hard for me to get off. I feel like I don't give my kids the attention that they need so I will now only go online after the kids are in bed. So here I am. As a result my blogs may not be too profound since the things I think about writing about have escaped my mind by the time I get online. So anyway, happy Valentines day!

Oh, Max said the cutest thing. My mom showed him the picture on the cover of the church news with President Monson. She asked Max who it was and he said, "That's President Monson. When President Hinckley died President Monson just jumped into his chair and took over."

Making Myself Feel Better

Well I had my audition. One great thing they do now is that they have you wait a few minutes and then tell you if you made callbacks. So..I waited and did NOT make call backs. That's okay though and here are the reason's why.

I hear Hale is very political.
I'm sick.
He played my song double the speed that I normally sing it.
Other than 3 children no one else in my group made it.
I haven't been in a show for 10 years.

I plan to see what Sandy City is doing this year and I will try out for that if it is something I'm interested in.

Head shot

Because of my audition tomorrow I was in need of a head shot. I asked Steven to photo shop it for me. You know, make my teeth whiter, stuff like that. This is what he came up with. Tell me what you think. I think I'm a shoe in for the part!

Happy Birthday To Me!!!

The title says it all. It is my Birthday today. Yeah. However like about 75% of my Birthdays I am sick. Bummer. We are going to see Lend Me a Tenor tonight at the Hale Theater tonight. Steven and Max bought me a new pair of jeans and they are one size smaller than I wore at Christmas! To celebrate I am going off my diet for a day and going to Cancun Cafe to have a chimmichunga. We also went to Denny's for breakfast to celebrate with the kids.
