Twinkies & Snowmobiles

Disclaimer: Once again this is a long entry. Sorry, but that's just the way I do it now I guess. Don't worry, I'll give you a week or two to read it until I do a new entry.

It's been a fun weekend in the Heumann home. A while back I got some evaporated milk from the case lot sale...it was not a good idea. I had gone back and forth to the store 3 times the week before to buy Evaporated Milk so I thought, why not. Well, that's about all the evaporated milk I use in a year. So here I was with 27 cans of Evaporated Milk that will go bad in November 2009 and one recipe that I really use on a semi-regular basis that calls for it. So, I googled Evaporated Milk recipes and this is what I found. Homemade twinkies! Who knew. If you dare take on this adventure here is my advise. Use a stand Mixer, I only have a hand mixer so I got very inpatient waiting for the eggs to form stiff peaks. Plus I didn't let the filling get fluffy enough so it was a little grainy. I would also suggest making your aluminum foil about an inch longer and give it at least 1-1/2 inches at the top (you will see why in my pictures). If you want a twinkie I say buy one. If you want a fun little baking adventure I say make them. They were quite yummy aside from the graininess. I'm almost always trying to eat healthy and I decided that I'm depriving my kids from the joy of baking and junk food. I think I'm going to bake something new at least once every other week so the kids and I can cook together and so they can see how much better a treat is when you make it. Plus Amber, the girl I watch with special needs, really enjoys cooking so it gives her something to do other than play dogs with Max. I also like to experiment with Whole Wheat flower when I bake. I made whole wheat chocolate chip cookies the other day, they tasted a little wheaty but I didn't feel quite so bad about eating them. You may have noticed that Elese is in her PJ's. This is 3:30 in the afternoon. I sacrificed hygiene for twinkies.

Saturday Steven had a shoot and he invited us to tag along. This doesn't happen a lot because most of the time they have a short amount of time to get a lot done. They were going snow mobiling at a ranch in Tabiona (or somewhere close to it). We spent the first little while in some nice guys warm RV while Steven got some shots and then we headed out on the sleds. Steven and Elese lead with Max and I in the middle while Stevens' boss, Chad, followed in case Max and I had any problems. I had never snowmobiled before (other that for about 5 min. about 3 years ago). Max was on the back and kept getting worried that he was going to fall off so we made several stops to reassure him. I even told him he could kick me if I went to fast. Eventually we switched around snow mobiles and put him on front. Despite his disappointment he rode with me most the time because when Elese has a helmet on she is like a bobble head. I think it would be better for the more experienced snow mobiller to take the bobble head.

Max had a blast but did shed quite a few tears because he was cold. When we had to stop to either dig out another snow mobiler or to film a quick segment he would get very cold and emotional. At one point I asked him if he ever wanted to come again and he said, "No, it's just too cold!" Once we got back to the car I asked him again and he said, "YES!!! It was so much fun!" I think it's funny that once we are over the pain that we can remember the fun, kind of like having a baby. :) Max was so tired that he didn't even notice Steven lift his car seat with him in it out of the company car and put it into our car. When we tucked him in bed he looked at me and said, "Oh no mom, we didn't get our car back!"

Elese also had a great time. After we had been riding a while (she was with me) she kept letting go of the handles so I stopped. This is when she "cried poop" and insisted on a diaper change. So there in the middle of the snowy wilderness I started to undress her to change her diaper. It didn't take long for her to realize that she would rather be warm than have a diaper change. Like I said, she cried poop, she wasn't really poopy, so we got her bundled again and continued on. On our way back to the RV she fell asleep. I was happy that she was ridding with Steven because she is an even bigger bobble head when she is asleep. I'm just glad she didn't fall off the sled. Right after Elese fell asleep Max did the same. Lucky for me he is big enough that he can't slip out from under my arms so it wasn't too tough for me to keep him on the snow mobile. We drove for at least 5 miles (I noticed the mile markers) with sound asleep kids. When we pulled up to the RV Elese woke up, looked at Steven and said, "I want to go faster." On the drive home she didn't not particularly like Max falling asleep on her shoulder but I eventually convinced her that he just wanted to cuddle with her and then she was okay.
All in all we had a great time. The kids loved buckling their seat belts in the RV. I enjoyed the scenery, and Steven had to work on another Saturday but got to enjoy it with his family. I would love to do it again with the proper snow attire and without crying kids. We also stopped at a lodge for a few more shots. It was beautiful!!! The idea is that a bunch of hunters can rent out the lodge, have meals provided for them, hunt by day and sit around the fire or the HD TV and share hunting stories by night. There were a lot of stuffed animals there (not little ones, you know like elk and stuff). Max went right up to them and started petting them. Elese on the other hand held to me as tightly as she could and hid her head. She was terrified of them. Although I'm not really down with the hunting thing I would love to stay in a place like that. They actually bread their own elk for hunting and then let them back out into the wilderness so they become wild. Crazy!
